Do you have good habits to keep your nerves in check?

  • First and foremost, take care of yourself
  • Taking care of the basics that focus on making you feel your best.
  • Eating healthy meals starting at least 2 days before the interview.
  • Keeping healthy snacks on hand before and after the interview that do positive things such as Macadamia nuts which will help with your mood.
  • Keeping your brain healthy and sharp for the interview. According to research, sugar and other high carb foods can give you brain fog and make you feel lethargic during the interview.
  • Other foods that many people have identified that cause brain fog are wheat gluten, dairy, fried food, and white sugar.
  • Fluids add oxygen and energy – such as green tea, flavored Kombucha, water, water with lemon or lime, carbonated water, or hot teas such as Lemon Grass tea, Peppermint tea or Ginger tea. Ginger tea will give you energy. If you need a sweetener for your tea try Monk Fruit or Stevia. Two other healthy sweeteners for tea are manuka honey and royal jelly in honey.
  • Some people believe that taking vitamin D3, B-complex, vitamin-C, zinc, and probiotics daily keeps them feeling energetic with no brain fog.
  • A brisk walk, a low-key bike ride, yoga, qi gong, or tai chi on the day of the interview will give you energy and allow you to think more clearly.
  • Identify colors to wear that compliment your complexion, give a positive or cheerful impression and provide you with confidence.
  • Second, remove the unknowns
  • It is impossible to remove all of the unknowns, but you can certainly take a bite out of a few unknowns.
  • There are two types of unknowns: (1) the unknowns that belong to you and (2) the unknowns with the people that you will meet directly or indirectly at the interview.
  • Address what you can control and do your research on your unknowns.
  • Ask who will be conducting the interview and the format of the interview.  Will this involve several interviews with different people, or a group of interviewers in a single meeting?
  • Ask if there will be a walk-through of the work environment.
  • Ask about proper attire for the interview and if you will need to make shoe or clothing adjustments for any tour of the work facility.
  • The unknowns for the interviewer and their co-workers can be an uncomfortable concern for them.
  • The interviewer unknown is how your personality will fit or clash with their culture.
  • The interviewer unknown can also include a concern of whether you listen and not over-talk the interview process.
  • Look for opportunities to remove the unknowns for the interviewer by being a good listener and keeping your personality in check until you know more about their culture.
  • Do not over-talk the interview with additional information that was not asked. The interviewer is not a priest, and this is not a confession.
  • Unknowns for the other people that you meet at the interview – Most employer team members will likely not know there is a job opening and/or wonder why you are there and walking through the facility with the boss.
  • If one of the employees ask you directly about your presence just simply reply that you are visiting the facility and complement their facility and/or work environment.
  • Remove the drive time unknown by driving the route 1-2 times before the day of the interview.
  • Remove the nerves by arriving early and spend the waiting time reading a favorite article or book. This does not mean gazing at your phone like a bored teenager.
  • Third, know who you are, your best traits, limitations, and what is most important to you in a job
  • If you are self-aware, in tune with your basic natural abilities, skills, and what tasks energize you, then you are a step above many candidates.
  • Sometimes personalities in an interview may not align, so the best approach is to be genuine, honest, and show natural zeal about this job opportunity.
  • Be able to describe yourself.  Ask a friend or relative to describe you so you can have diverse adjectives. Prepare your ‘elevator pitch’ well in advance and practice before the interview.
  • Few people know where they want to be in five years but those who have an appetite to learn, to be mentored, and to be involved with opportunities that may be out of your comfort zone are of great value.
  • Walk in the door with mindset of a listener-extraordinaire instead of a know-it-all.
  • Trust your instincts, take notes, and ask questions when it seems appropriate.  Think about a couple of questions ahead of time.  While other questions may occur to you during the interview, you will have some good questions in your pocket in case you go “blank”.

  • Fourth, you want to answer all of the questions to the best of your ability
  • There will be interview questions that may need further clarification. Interpretation of your answers can sometimes be the wrong interpretation, and you may see that on the face of the interviewer.
  • How to correct a potentially perceived wrong answer: Ask the interviewer if you covered the topics they wanted to hear about.  Ask if they would like for you to further qualify and/or provide additional detail. That will give the interviewer the option to possibly reword their question and allow you to address the question again with more direct or relevant detail.
  • Never play to the job description and tell the interviewer what you think he or she wants to hear.
  • Stay calm and alert, confident, and courteous.  This is an interview not a “This is Your Life”, so do not provide information that is not requested.

Thinking through your job search strategy

Do not let your emotions do the thinking when making a strategy for your job search.

You should have two strategies unless you are a seasoned IT professional: (1) A strategy to submit for jobs for which you are qualified and have the required experience with specific tools and skills for the job. (2) A separate strategy for submitting to jobs that prefers experience that you do not have. As a junior or intermediate level IT professional you will see many jobs where you have the confidence to succeed; however, most employers need candidates to come in the door and start without any delays due to lack of hands-on with the tools they are using. If you do not have the exact experience but you have hands-on with a few of the tools and you are in the geographical area then your strategy is to speak to their needs that you know best. Related skills may help, but hands-on experience with a few of the required skills will give you a hand up. Do your homework on the company and know what makes them a leader in their field. Not having the required or desired skill for a job but submitting just because the job is located in your back yard will get you zero RESPECT and may get you on a type of black list. When submitting for a job that you meet most if not all of the requirements then do extra homework on the company including reading what the media and individuals are writing about the company.

Target your job search

Defining a search scope that is aligned with your skill set, interests, resume, and LinkedIn profile will serve you well and save time. Spending time on jobs that do not really interest you will take up time and energy. Your strategy should have an identifiable target, if not a narrow target, that is aligned with the content of your skill set and knowledge. As always, with each job expand your knowledge base by volunteering and/or getting involved with projects that expand your resume. Expanding your knowledge also includes taking online classes or reading a book on a specific IT/IS tools, and/or doing some volunteer work for a non-profit that will provide you with some additional skills. Most hiring managers are conducting a narrow search and targeting a subject matter expert in their searches. If you are currently employed, don’t leave just to make a change or because you are running away from a certain job situation. Leave because you are running to a new opportunity that excites you and gives you room to grow and be at your best.

Research all employers

Now that you have a strategy and a target search method it is time to practice good research habits. A job description is not only describing an open position; it is also making a statement that the company has certain problems and/or challenges that need to be resolved. You may never be able to do enough research to identify what exact problems exist, but the job description provides key-words and guidance on what to look and listen for. There are many outlets for in depth research on a company; you should take advantage of all tools and people available to you.

Time to share a resume

You have a strategy, a specific target of jobs and/or employers, and you’ve done your homework on potential employers. If you are submitting your resume for a job posted job by a specific employer, then focus your resume on the job description and the keywords. You should use (modify) your resume to speak directly to the details identified in the job description, because – as we said earlier – the job description is also communicating the problems and/or challenges the company needs (or will need) to solve. If you just submit a resume without a focus on the employer’s needs, that resume will fall flat and eventually into file 13 (the trash). Ensure that your resume format is up to date and competitive. As an IT professional, you can easily quantify your successes, because you develop things that solve problems, save money, help the company to be more efficient, and meet company goals that are either customer related or bottom line related. The hiring manager does not want to read a list of duties and responsibilities but wants to see that you have quantifiable successes that suggest hiring you will be a good return on their investment (ROI). Do not be overly technical with your resume speak to the key-words on the job description.

Job search toolbox

Keeping your LinkedIn profile and resume up to date is very important. Making those contacts in LinkedIn or other network groups, or past co-workers, is a tool in your toolbox. I recognize that some want and/or need a certain amount of privacy or security and want a limited internet foot print. I certainly respect those who have a need for privacy and security. I know many folks who are active military, police, sheriffs, rangers, secret service, border patrol and similar related services encourage their close family members to keep a low profile for their safety. Strategically think through your online profile to ensure you meet the need to advertise your accomplishments and skills as well as the need for safety and privacy for you and your family.

One size does not fit all when submitting a resume

There are now many avenues where you can submit a resume. Many times, I remind people who live in very populated areas to learn what employers are in the area. Once you do your research on the employers that are aligned with your career path and skill set, don’t hesitate to try the in-person approach. Put your resume in an envelope that looks like an interoffice envelope designating it to the attention of human resources and drop it off yourself at the reception desk to get it into the company’s interoffice mail. Many times interoffice mail gets quicker attention, and paper cannot be easily deleted like an email. You also have many other potential options for sharing resumes with direct contacts, former co-workers, clubs, churches, contacts at sports events, and social networks. Speak to all levels of people and try to get the scoop on an open position: anyone from the facility janitor to outside vendors may know and/or overhear about new job opportunities. Even local daycare center workers or small local markets close to an employer know more than they should about local businesses. Job board postings are always in front of you. I suggest that you be very selective when submitting via a job board.

I will reiterate: When submitting to any posted job, use your resume to speak to the job description – using key words and phrases – so the reader can see that you read their job description and that you can assist with solving their problems and meet their needs.

What now – the resume had been submitted

At times companies get overwhelmed with too many resumes. To get the word out, let acquaintances who are associated with a targeted organization know that you have shared a resume with a specific employer and hope to meet and/or speak with someone within that organization.

What now – I received a reply that seems to show interest

Follow up with courtesy and energy if you get a reply that expresses any level of interest. Whether it is email or a letter, show that you are a positive communicator and a person who has genuine interest in the company and the position. A hand written letter sets you apart from others.

Knowing who you are and where you fit regarding a career is your greatest asset. Before the age of the internet, many of us have had times in our earlier career path of uncertainty about our target interest and what excites us most. Using the modern search methods provided by the internet can provide you with a visual insight into so many career paths and/or industries that may utilize your strongest skills and meet your needs as a person.

The next generation will have access to jobs that have not yet been created. That means keep your eyes on the latest soon to be main-stream technology such as Hydrogen Cars, or Hydrogen planes and the need to construct Hydrogen fueling stations. Both are far into the R&D stage and will need employees to make these products and services main-stream.

If your education, your degree has a track record of a positive (ROI) return on investment then you can have confidence that your skills will be in demand. Obviously our economy is growing in a dominate technology path of different types.

One size does not fit all when conducting a job search. Old-school job search of reviewing job postings and new-school job searching via networking, referrals, and other contacts have its pros and cons. All of the above may provide more return than just doing one or the other. The success numbers are not great with just submitting to job postings so spread your efforts out and have a diverse approach. Remember, know who you are and your interest.

It is not hard to stand out?

After 25 years of using behavior-based interviews, as an HR professional and recruiter, I have noticed those candidates that stand out are genuine, confident but real, calm/assertive, with a can-do attitude. Communications skills, team work, and engendering others to generate trust from colleagues leaves a lasting impression.

Many times job search mistakes are derived from everyday habits of the job searcher. Such as grammatical errors, dated resume format, or just forgetting to do the simple things such as identify your employers industry on the resume. Do you really want the reader of your resume to stop reading your resume because they cannot determine the industry category of your employers?

Be a positive communicator and work with the recruiter who has reached out to you. They may or may not have polished skills but they do have what you don’t have – and that is a potential job offer.

Being honest and direct will serve you well. That does not mean you have to tell everything with the initial contact.

If the recruiter is an external recruiter the per-qualifying process will be much more involved and time consuming. If you are speaking and working with an internal recruiter who is an employee of the hiring company then they many not be as complete with their per-qualifying process. However, consider yourself luck if you submitted to a large company direct and they replied. Large companies get overwhelmed with so many unwanted resumes. Many times your resume may not get looked at for a period of time or just mis-placed in a large pool of resumes.
